It\u2019s no secret that weather is a massive factor when deciding where to head and that visitors will be looking to avoid the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/latest\/2021\/03\/top-20-rainiest-cities-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rainiest cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and flock to the coast where there\u2019s more sunshine. But which UK coastal cities are blessed with the most hours of summer sunshine? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>OUR RESEARCH<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out, we conducted a study of the hours of sunshine that each UK coastal city receives throughout the summer. Hastings\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hastings, situated in East Sussex, was found to receive the second most hours of summertime sunshine, with 718 hours on average each year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hastings is a popular retreat for those seeking a coastal break with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visit1066country.com\/destinations\/hastings\/things-to-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plenty of attractions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, flaunting exciting history, Britain\u2019s steepest funicular and a stunning aquarium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>3. Dover<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coastal city of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dover<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, renowned for its stunning white cliffs, receives 710 hours of summertime sunshine on average each year &#8211; the fourth highest of all coastal cities in the UK. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dover boasts both coastal and countryside routes, gorgeous rural landscapes and exciting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sea life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>5. Isle of Wight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 709 hours of summertime sunshine on average each year, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitisleofwight.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isle of Wight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the UK coastal city with the fifth most hours of summertime sun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the Isle of Wight hosts plenty of attractions to enjoy in the lovely weather, such as landmarks, gardens, theme parks, beaches and countless other exciting activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>WHICH UK COASTAL CITIES RECEIVE THE <em>LEAST<\/em>\u00a0HOURS OF SUNSHINE?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1. The Highlands<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With just 382 hours of summertime sunshine on average each year, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitscotland.com\/destinations-maps\/highlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranked as the UK coastal city with the least hours of sun in the summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the Scottish site compensates for what it loses in sunshine with beautiful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitscotland.com\/blog\/stargazing\/inverness-cairngorms-stargazing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stargazing spots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, majestic mountains and breathtaking seascapes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2742\" style=\"width: 429px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2742\" class=\"wp-image-2742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/coastal-cities-with-most-sunshine-the-highlands.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/coastal-cities-with-most-sunshine-the-highlands.jpg 747w, https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/coastal-cities-with-most-sunshine-the-highlands-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/coastal-cities-with-most-sunshine-the-highlands-650x434.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The Highlands | <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/nIzIbrytpfA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unsplash \/\u00a0Ramon Vloon<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2. Moray\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/morayspeyside.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed shortly behind in second. Although it impresses visitors with its landscape, adventure and history, those visiting this coastal destination in the summer may be lucky to see the sunshine, since the city only receives 435 hours of sunshine on average each year, according to our study.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3. Aberdeenshire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receiving 446 hours of summertime sunshine on average each year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitscotland.com\/destinations-maps\/aberdeen-city-shire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aberdeenshire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is revealed to be the UK coastal city receiving the third least sunshine throughout the summer season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although, with or without the sun, Aberdeenshire has a whole host of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitabdn.com\/seasons\/summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summertime events and activities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3= Argyll and Bute\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also receiving only 446 hours of sunshine in the summer on average each year and sharing the third spot with Aberdeenshire is the coastal city of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenscotland.co\/argyll-and-bute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argyll and Bute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>Here you will find sandy beaches, beautiful wildlife, and great hospitality. Scottish Borders<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fifth UK coastal city that receives the least amount of summertime sunshine is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitscotland.com\/destinations-maps\/scottish-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scottish Borders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Scottish city only averages 448 hours of sun each year throughout the summer months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with spell-binding abbeys and exhilarating attractions such as mountain biking, archery and surfing, the lack of sun may not be a deal-breaker for those looking for an exciting coastal retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Methodology:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Of 109 UK coastal cities, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showerstoyou.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showerstoyou.co.uk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sought to find which coastal city receives the most hours of summer sunshine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Boundary shapefiles across the UK containing both districts, towns and boroughs from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordnance Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were collected. (Please note: It is not possible to get NI data from the Ordnance Survey).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Geospatial software <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qgis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QGis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was then used to select specific features across the UK. These features were based on the evaluation that coastal cities resided between the interface of land and sea (FAO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. The data gathered was then exported into the R-programming software for data manipulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Two functions were implemented for quick access of data, one to select all files with the \u201c.nc\u201d extension and another to collect the tail from the selection for only summer periods, which concluded 10 years of Sunshine data taken from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Met Office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Geospatial analysis in R was implemented with the following packages: Terra and Sf. The netCDF files were converted into SpatRasters that can read these files into vectorised form and tabulate into list-access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. The shapefile containing the coastal districts was read into R using the sf-package, and values from the SpatRasters were extracted relative to the shapefile extent, while the weighted mean was calculated across those years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. In Excel, the file went through a selective procedure of processing, filtering and applying conditional formatting. The percentage rank for the coastal cities were implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Finally, this Excel file was read back into R, alongside the coastal city&#8217;s shapefile.
