Studies have shown that people who wear perfume are more likely to be perceived as more confident and socially skilled. The popularity of these luxury items is constantly growing, with the perfume market expected to increase with an annual growth rate of 8.3% over the next 3 years as per the report Luxury Perfume Sector: Worldwide Forecast until 2021. While in 2016 the global fragrance and perfume market was worth as much as £31 billion, in 2022 the number is expected to reach a whopping £65 billion.

Bath and shower experts Showerstoyou.co.uk know how important scents can be, and wanted to find out what type of perfume and aftershave men and women find most attractive on each other, according to their zodiac sign. To do so, Showerstoyou analysed certain character traits associated with each star sign, and the fragrance most commonly cited by conducting a survey asking 1,440 men and women their zodiac sign to reveal what type of fragrance they find most attractive when worn by their partner.

What do men find attractive on a woman?

Aries: A man with this fiery sign enjoys warm spicy notes for their partner. Sweet notes are also a popular choice. They don’t get intimidated by strong, opulent scents: Black Orchid – Tom Ford

Taurus: Men with this zodiac sign are generous and devoted, yet sometimes stubborn. Woody and powdery notes for their partners would attract these earth signs: Vol de Nuit – Guerlain

Gemini: The majority of Gemini men who took part in the survey said they prefer sweet lingering notes in women’s perfumes. They are gentle and affectionate and sweet scents would sweep them of their feet: Illicit – Jimmy Choo

Cancer: Men under the cancer sign prefer feminine scents, usually opting for floral and fruity notes. They tend to dislike scents that are too sweet and overwhelming: J’adore – Dior

Leo: Men with this star sign tend to choose sweet and ‘edible’ notes for their partners such as vanilla, coffee and caramel: Black Opium – YSL

Virgo: Virgo men prefer floral and musky notes. Again, a scent too strong won’t work for these earthy men. Flower Bomb – Viktor & Rolf

Libra: Citrus and oriental floral notes are a Libras’ favourite for their partner. Men prefer their ladies to smell fresh: Coco Mademoiselle – Chanel

Scorpio: Those who have Scorpio as their star sign are emotionally charged and find oriental floral and fruity scents to be the most attractive: The One – Dolce & Gabbana

Sagittarius: Men under this sign are wild and free and that reflects the scents they enjoy. They love scents with fresh floral and salty notes: Olympea – Paco Rabanne

Capricorn: The majority of those who took part in the survey said that a woman wearing a vanilla and/or woody scent is what they find most attractive: Manifesto – YSL

Aquarius: Those who are born Aquarius are positive and energetic and so is the scent they prefer. Aquarius men like a scent with fresh and green notes for their partners: Chance – Chanel

Pieces: Anyone who is Pisces is associated with water, and they tend to be gentle and wise and they prefer softer notes. A perfume with amber and white floral notes is right up their alley: Alien – Mugler

 

What do women find attractive on men?

Aries: An Aries woman is warm and passionate as her fire sign predicts. They prefer when men wear aftershave with citrus and fresh spicy notes: Terre – d’Hermes

Taurus: These suborn ladies know what they want, and that is a partner who wears a fragrance with woody aromatic notes: Bleu de Chanel – Chanel

 

Gemini: These ladies have a bubbly personality and they love laughing. Simultaneously, they prefer aromatic green notes for their partners: Hugo – Hugo Boss

To what extent are fragrances an aphrodisiac?

Furthermore, showerstoyou.co.uk sought to find out how attractive they find their partner when wearing a fragrance. To do so, they asked the respondents: ‘Do you find a partner more attractive if they are wearing perfume?’, 68% of the ladies surveyed said ‘yes’, while only 48% of men find perfume on their special women as appealing.

Moreover, the respondents were asked if they were ever put off by a partner’s scent. A whopping 32% of women taking part in the survey said ‘yes’, as did 12% of men surveyed.

Many studies have shown there is a connection between sexual attraction and scent, one of them being the ‘Human Male Sexual Response to Olfactory Stimuli’; research conducted by The American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons. This study reports the effects of 30 different scents on 31 men, recording their sexual arousal, and the results concluded that each odour produced an increase in penile blood flow, with the most ‘desirable’ one being a combination of lavender and pumpkin scents.

Simultaneously, studies have also shown a correlation between female arousal and odour, especially during the most fertile time of the month when they find certain smells more appealing.

Charlotte Parkes, a respondent of the survey, said:
“Scent is incredibly important for me. I went on dates with men who appear to be my perfect match on first sight, however when we got closer I was so put off by their aftershave that a second date was off the table almost immediately. If their smell is over empowering, it’s hard to see through the positives!”

Mark Craig, a Scorpio, with a nose for beautiful scents said:
“When it comes to getting a gift for my partner, perfume is always a good option as I always love when she wears one. I tend to go for floral scents, with vanilla notes. I can’t stand scents that are too strong or too sweet, they are a bit too sickly for me.”
