6 Ways To Make Your Bathroom More Eco-Friendly

Owing to the masses of water and energy wasted by households each year as well as the tonnes of plastic that end up in oceans or landfills, people are rightfully worried about the state of the environment and are looking for ways to act in a more eco-friendly fashion.

Fortunately, the bathroom experts at ShowersToYou have compiled this useful guide on how to make your bathroom more eco-friendly, to help you start making that change from home.

Our top six ways to make your bathroom more eco-friendly:

1. Invest In A Smart Shower

One of the leading ways to make your bathroom more eco-friendly is to invest in technology that reduces water consumption where it is most wasted – the shower. Fortunately, there are a wide range of smart and digitised showers available on the market today, most of which offer an eco-friendly setting that restricts the flow of water but doesn’t compromise on experience.

Perhaps the biggest eco-benefit of a smart shower is that it knows how to control the water flow depending on your use. For example, shower models (such as the Aqualisa Q range) boast a proximity sensor which determines how much water you require by reducing the flow when you move away from the shower and increasing it when you are beneath it.

2. Change To A Dual Flush Toilet

Another eco-friendly swap you can make for your bathroom is to change to a dual-flush toilet in order to cut down on your water usage. When you trade your single flush toilet for a more sophisticated, dual-flush model, you are able to reduce the volume of water used to flush liquid waste and opt for a greater volume of water to flush away solid waste.

This would mean that each and every time you flush the toilet, you are only using the minimum amount of water required, which is better for the environment in the long term.

If you are looking to replace your traditional single flush toilet for a newer model, we have a wide range of dual-flush systems in a range of colours to modernise your bathroom and look after the environment.

3. Get Refillable Containers

Another way in which you can make your bathroom space more sustainable is by trading in single-use plastic bottles for refillable containers instead. Not only does it work out better for the environment, but it often also tends to work out cheaper over time.

Some small changes you can make in this regard include not purchasing shampoo, soap and conditioner in plastic bottles and refilling a reusable container instead. By doing this, you cut down the number of single-use plastic containers that typically end up contaminating our landfills and oceans.

If you are looking for an eco-conscious way to store your toiletries, we stock a wide range of refillable and reusable containers of all sizes for all purposes, so you are bound to find the perfect one for your bathroom space.

4. Eco-Friendly Lighting Alternatives

Many of us are also guilty of forgetting to turn the bathroom light off after we use it, which is another wasteful habit to curb. There are two main solutions, though.

Firstly, you should embrace natural light in your bathroom, since this means we rely on artificial lighting far less. If you are lucky enough to have large windows then we recommend keeping these clear to let as much natural light in as possible. However, if you do not, it is worth considering how else you can bring natural light into the room, either by keeping the bathroom door open when possible or removing clutter nearby windows.

If you are still struggling to get enough light from natural means, you may want to invest in illuminated bathroom cabinets instead. LED lighting is widely regarded as more efficient than ordinary lighting since it uses up to 90% less power than some alternatives. Not only are they more efficient, but they are also cheaper and longer-lasting, which means they need replacing far less often.

5. Timed Flow Control Taps

Another way to reduce water waste in your bathroom and become more eco-friendly is by controlling the flow of water from your taps. One specific product that can do this is a timed flow tap which saves both water and energy consumption by limiting the flow of water to the spout and shutting off the tap’s flow of water automatically after a number of minutes.

There are a few situations in which this is most efficient, with the main being when you are brushing your teeth, as this action is renowned for wasting up to six litres of water per minute! Instead of letting the water flow continuously, limit water waste (and money!) by purchasing a timed flow control tap to regulate and restrict water flow.

6. Reconsider Your Toiletries

Finally, making your bathroom more eco-friendly involves everything that is in it – from the soap you use to your toothbrush. For those that are especially committed to becoming more eco-conscious with their bathroom habits, we recommend trading wasteful products for more efficient ones.

For example, instead of purchasing single-use face wipes, which are thrown away once used, look for reusable alternatives like flannels or make up removal cloths. Similarly, many people prefer reusable razors to disposable ones for this reason, too. You might even want to begin to consider how your toiletries are packaged, and what the implications of this are for the environment. After all, making small but regular changes are often just as effective as making big changes.
