Is it safe to pour boiling water in the drain?

You may have noticed that we advised NOT to pour boiling water down the drain. While some experts say that boiling water would not damage metal pipes, it’s best to be safe as with regular use you could still damage the joints and pipe fittings over time. To avoid that, bring the water to a boil, turn off the over, and let it sit for a couple of minutes to cool down slightly before pouring it down the drain.

What causes drain odour?

– Dry trap

One cause for drain odour can be ‘dry trap’. This is usually the case in the bathrooms that are not used frequently, as the lack of water flowing in the taps allows sewer fumes to come up the drain.

– Pipe blockage

If you have long hair you probably experience pipe blockage. The combination of hair and soap will clog the pipes and the bacteria will create an awful smell.

– Mould

If you have even the smallest leak in a pipe it’s enough for mildew and mould to build up, which can create that awful drain odour people want to get rid of.

To get rid of drain odour you’ll have to get rid of what causes it first. If the reason for the bad odour is a build-up of mould, then the best approach is to call a plumber and let them fix the issue. Once the mould is gone the smell should also subside.
