Small Toilet Ideas: 7 Decorating Trends For 2019

With the rise in urbanisation, space is a premium and home-owners are having to come up with more inventive ways to decorate small spaces.

Most difficult, perhaps, is coming up with decorating ideas for your small toilet room or cloakroom. Especially if you need to come up with under stairs toilet design ideas, where the room layout can sometimes be a little tricky.  It is important to marry style with practicality, so here are six design trends for 2019 that would be great to consider when decorating a small toilet space.

1. Woodwork

Designing the interior of your under stairs toilet with wood may make you wonder whether you are installing a Swedish spa into your home- but it is a very unique way to lighten up a room (depending on the choice of wood) and acts as a stylish addition. The use of wood is actually a great idea for an under stairs toilet design as it can successfully transition you from the rooms downstairs into your toilet room. This is because woodwork offers the opposite of the typical cold feel of marble found in bathrooms, making it a cosy extension of your downstairs.

2. Earthy tones

When it comes to which colour to paint an under stairs toilet room, you might want to consider colours like green, beige and shades of brown or grey. As unlike 2018 bathroom trends, which favoured bright colours, an earthy palette is a hot 2019 design favourite. As a cloakroom toilet is quite small, it is best to leave the darker tones in their pots and go for lighter beiges to create the illusion of space – softer colours in bathroom and toilet areas also add more value to your home.

3. Contrasts

A great way to decorate a small interior is to play with contrasts. Using one wall as a statement wall, leaving the others white, you can create the illusion of a larger space – so is a great small toilet idea. You can also play with shapes and patterns in either wallpaper, bathroom accessories or tiles that contrast against plain walls or the white of your toilet and basin.

4. Art deco and Victorian

This next small toilet design trend will take you back in time. In particular, art deco influences are in for 2019. You can feature this in the shape of your sink and toilet, or with soft furnishings. The use of cast iron, popular in the Victoria era, is also a great small cloakroom toilet idea that will be bang on trend for the next year.

5. Masculinity

A big trend for 2019, and a great decorating idea for your small toilet room, is masculine design elements. Masculinity can be incorporated through industrial basin taps or even a basin trough. Exposed piping, use of concrete and matte black fixtures are all so-called masculine elements you can use in a downstairs toilet.

6. Statements

Just because you are working with a tiny toilet room, it doesn’t mean you can’t make a big impact. A hot bathroom trend for 2019 that you can incorporate when decorating your cloakroom is statement pieces. This can be achieved with detailed wallpaper, bold tiling or even a statement accessory such as a mirror. Be careful not to overwhelm the room with design, however.

7. Brass

Copper, or rose gold, is no longer the metal du jour, despite its popularity in 2018. If you want to use metal elements in your downstairs toilet, then brass or even cast iron are designer favourites for 2019. Other trends that are on their way out include: subway tiles and millennial pink. It just goes to show that sometimes, classic is best in order to avoid any potential future outdated-ness.
