Shower Tray Sizes in the UK: A Guide

Since it’s an important part of your bathroom design and will be in-situ for a long time, getting the right shower tray is essential. Size is an important consideration when choosing a shower tray, but it’s not always as straightforward as you may think as standard shower tray sizes vary in the UK. In this shower tray sizes guide, we outline everything you need to know about what size shower tray you will need for your bathroom, depending on the type of shower enclosure you have.

What size shower tray do I need?

There are several different types of shower tray on the market, and each one is suitable for bathrooms of varying sizes and designs. But calculating which shower tray you require isn’t as simple as picking up a tape measure and buying whatever matches the dimensions of your bathroom, just like you would with a pair of curtains.

Therefore, when it comes to measuring, it is wise to follow the advice of a professional as each shower tray is dependent on the type of shower you have, or the configuration of your bathroom space. For instance, some shapes of shower tray may fit best with more compact shower enclosures, or you may be able to use a bigger shower tray by installing a shower door that doesn’t swing outwards, meaning you wouldn’t have to leave any extra space for the door to swing into.

What are the standard shower tray sizes?

There is no “standard” shower tray size, as each property’s bathroom is different to the next. Depth and width significantly vary depending on the shape of the tray, however generally speaking, shower tray sizes range from:

Type of shower tray Width and depth Height
Standard shower tray 700 mm – 2000 mm 25 mm – 80 mm
Quadrant shower tray 800 mm – 1200 mm 25 mm – 80 mm
Square shower tray 700 mm – 1500 mm 25 mm – 80 mm
Rectangular shower tray 800 mm – 2000 mm 0 mm – 45 mm
D-shape shower tray 700 mm – 1700 mm 40 mm – 65 mm

Quadrant shower trays are the perfect choice for smaller bathrooms, as they often have a curved front that is suitable for both a sliding or hinged shower door.

But, due to being so small, quadrant shower trays don’t offer a very spacious shower space. If this doesn’t appeal to you, you may want to look at offset quadrant shower trays instead. This type of shower tray used a combination of straight edges and curves to create more showering space, whilst still fitting neatly into the corner of your bathroom.

Width and depth: 800mm – 1200mm

Height: 25mm – 80mm

Square-sized shower trays are great for any bathroom and one of the most popular, due to their versatile shape and small shower tray size.

Square shower trays can be installed against any wall or in the corner of a room. By finding the perfect shower enclosure to match, they can be just as compact as a quadrant shower tray – in some instances offering more space than a quadrant tray. For instance, if you added a bi-fold shower door to a square shower tray, you wouldn’t require as much room surrounding the shower.

Rectangular shower tray sizes

As you may expect, rectangular shower trays tend to be wider than square or quadrant trays, thus meaning they’re best suited to larger bathrooms. This type of shower tray is often considered a “luxury” option, as they are considerably larger than other, more common, shower trays.

If your bathroom will fit a rectangular shower tray, yet you would still like to optimise space in the best way possible, a sliding shower door is the perfect option. This allows the shower to take up less space, whilst still being more spacious than other shower door and enclosure pairings.

If your bathroom is quite small in size – it may be a guest bathroom or ensuite – you may not have enough space to fit in a square or rectangular shower tray. Furthermore, if your bathroom is awkwardly designed, you may not have space for a corner to install a quadrant tray either. In this instance, the perfect compromise would be a D-shape shower tray and enclosure.

D-shape shower trays are highly compact, and they only have one flat edge, which means they can be installed against any bathroom wall – unlike a quadrant shower enclosure and tray – and take up less space overall than other smaller alternatives, such as a square shower tray.

Height: 40mm – 65mm

Instead of a shower enclosure and shower door, you may prefer to install your very own walk-in shower or wet room. This is a fantastic way to make the most of the space in a small bathroom.

There are specialised shower trays for wet rooms and walk-in shower enclosures, which are slimmer and have a strong waterproof base to ensure the water doesn’t seep into the walls. They can either be set into the floor with your choice of wet room flooring laid over the top, or you can purchase a thinner rectangular shower tray to sit above the floor too – the choice is yours.

If you find that it is too hard to compromise on space in your bathroom for a bath and shower, it may be worth considering a shower and bath combo instead.
