  1. Start the Year with a Luxurious Walk In Shower

    Walk In Main

Walk In ImageAs the new year dawns, it’s an ideal opportunity to rejuvenate your living space. An excellent starting point is your bathroom, a place of daily rejuvenation. Transforming it with a lavish walk-in shower enclosure can elevate your comfort and enjoyment. A walk-in shower is more than just a functional fixture; it’s a statement of style and luxury. In this blog post, Showers to You shares valuable insight on creating a luxurious walk in shower experience.

    Choose the Right Showerhead

As the centrepiece of any walk-in shower, the shower head holds the key to transforming your bathing routine. The right choice can elevate your experience, providing functionality, a sense of luxury, and relaxation. A fixed showerhead, for instance, can deliver a gentle, waterfall-like flow of water, creating a serene, spa-like atmosphere in your bathroom. Imagine the soothing sound of water cascading down, enveloping you in a cocoon of tranquillity as you start or end your day. This is the luxury experience Hudson Reed Fixed Shower Heads aims to deliver.

    Opt for Shower Wall Panels

In bathroom renovations, there’s a distinct shift from traditional shower tiles to Shower Wall Panels. Shower wall panels combine elegance and durability that last a lifetime. Among the most sought-after are the Kartell Wall Panels and Nuance Wall Panels. These panels are stylish and practical, offering easy installation and maintenance.

It’s a modern, stylish, and practical solution that will elevate the aesthetics of your bathroom. Instead of using materials that absorb moisture, such as tiles, these panels are made of non-absorbent materials like PVC. This makes them more resistant to moisture damage, a common issue in bathrooms. Generally speaking, Shower Wall Panels are often easier to maintain and install than traditional bathroom tiles.

    Install a High-End Shower System

Consider a high-end shower system installation to elevate your bathroom to a luxury spa. Incorporating digital shower controls enables a personalised shower experience, enhancing comfort and convenience. Customisable lighting options can create the perfect ambience, while an integrated sound system introduces a new level of relaxation. Concealed Mixer Shower Systems offer a sleek, modern aesthetic and seamless integration into your bathroom design.

    Add Walk In Glass Panels

Glass panels infuse luxury and elegance into walk-in showers, enhancing their aesthetic appeal. Acting as dividers, they create a private, intimate shower space, offering a serene retreat. Available in various sizes and finishes, glass panels can be tailored to complement your bathroom design seamlessly. The thickness of the glass also plays a crucial role in determining the panel’s durability and safety. Thicker glass panels, such as the Merlyn 10 Series with 10mm glass, provide enhanced stability, making them a safer option for family bathrooms. With various thicknesses available, you can choose the one that best suits your needs and comfort levels.

    Don’t Forget the Accessories

Accessories play a pivotal role in determining the aesthetic and functionality of your walk-in shower. They add character, enhance convenience, and ensure a comfortable bathing experience. A crucial accessory is a shower seat, which is particularly beneficial for those with mobility struggles. Wetroom accessories are essential to refine your shower space. They range from sleek soap dishes to modern robe hooks, each adding a touch of luxury and practicality.

Shower trays form the foundation of your shower area, dictating its functionality and safety. Low Profile Shower Trays are a popular choice among homeowners. Their slim design integrates seamlessly into the bathroom floor, offering a discreet, contemporary look.

  2. Heated Bathroom Features to Combat Winter

    Heated Bathroom Features Main Image

A heated, comfortable bathroom becomes an inviting retreat at the onset of chillier seasons. However, ensuring consistent warmth can be challenging, especially when conventional radiators occupy crucial wall space and fall short of constant heat. Luckily, a range of heated bathroom features can combat the winter chill. In this blog post, Showers to You explore the benefits of heated towel rails, radiators, and underfloor heating. We’ll also highlight different subcategories of each to help you choose the best-heated bathroom feature for your needs.

    Heated Towel Rails:

Heated Towel Rail ImageHeated towel rails are an excellent addition to your bathroom, offering warmth and practicality. They help keep towels dry, fluffy, and warm. You can choose from straight heated towel rails, providing a sleek, modern aesthetic. Alternatively, curved heated towel rails offer a unique design twist. Electric towel rails bring the benefit of energy efficiency, while stainless steel options promise durability and style. Each type has its own advantages, catering to different needs and tastes. Therefore, consider which type fits your bathroom’s design and functionality requirements best.

A Straight-heated Towel rail is a vertical, stylish fixture in modern bathrooms. It provides warmth and dries towels efficiently. The rail’s straight design combines practicality with aesthetic appeal.

A Curved Heated Towel Rail is a practical bathroom feature with a unique design. This rail offers a refreshing break from traditional straight lines with its curved structure. It serves dual functions – heating your bathroom and drying your towels efficiently. The curve adds a touch of elegance while maximising towel hanging space.Electric Heated Towel Rail

An Electric Heated Towel Rail is a versatile and efficient heating product from Showers to You. This rail uses electricity to provide heat, making it an excellent choice for homes without central heating or those needing additional warmth. It’s functional and adds a touch of sophistication to your bathroom.

A Stainless Steel Towel Rail is known for its robustness and longevity. Its sleek design adds a modern touch to your bathroom. Furthermore, an Aluminium Towel Rail offers lightweight durability and superior heat conduction. Its elegant design complements any bathroom décor. This rail effectively warms your bathroom and dries towels swiftly.

    Radiators:

Column RadiatorRadiators are a common bathroom heating solution, but not all radiators are created equal. There are several subcategories of radiators, including column, central heating, electric, compact, and more.

A Column Radiator is a high-performing and aesthetically pleasing heating solution. Manufactured from durable materials, it ensures efficient heat distribution. The column design adds an elegant touch to any room.

Central Heating Radiators are made from durable materials that distribute heat evenly and efficiently. We offer three types: Type 11, Type 21, and Type 22. Type 11 Radiators are single-panel, single-convector models. They’re slim and perfect for rooms with limited space. Type 21 Radiators feature a double-panel, single-convector design. They offer greater heat output than Type 11, making them suitable for medium-sized rooms. Finally, Type 22 Radiators deliver the highest heat output with a double-panel, double-convector design. Ideal for large spaces needing more warmth.

An Electric Radiator is a versatile heating solution. It uses electricity to generate heat, providing efficient warmth distribution. The Electric Radiator is an excellent choice for those seeking independent heating solutions. It doesn’t require a central heating system, offering flexibility in installation and use.

    Underfloor Heating:

Underfloor heating provides consistent warmth and frees up wall space, making it an excellent option for smaller bathrooms. There are two types of underfloor heating to choose from: electric and water-based.

    Underfloor Heating

Electric underfloor heating is a modern heating solution. It uses electric cables or mats installed beneath the floor to generate warmth. This heating system evenly distributes heat across the room, ensuring a comfortable living environment. It’s efficient, providing consistent warmth without high energy consumption. Electric underfloor heating is versatile. It can be installed under various flooring types, including tile, stone, and laminate. It’s a hidden heat source that allows for more interior design freedom. With no visible radiators or heaters, rooms appear more spacious and sleek.

    Radiators

Water-based underfloor heating, or hydronic underfloor heating, is popular. It uses water heated by a boiler to generate warmth. This system involves a network of pipes laid beneath the floor. Hot water circulates within these pipes, radiating heat upwards into the room. One benefit of water-based underfloor heating is its energy efficiency. It operates at lower temperatures compared to traditional radiators, reducing energy consumption. Another advantage is the even distribution of heat. It creates a comfortable and consistent temperature, eliminating cold spots in the room.

Heated bathroom features are a great way to warm your bathroom during the colder months. Heated towel rails, radiators, and underfloor heating have their own benefits and subcategories. When selecting a heated bathroom feature, consider the size and style of your bathroom, as well as your heating needs and preferences. At Showers to You, we offer a range of high-quality heated bathroom features from leading manufacturers to ensure total peace of mind. 4. Keep Your Bathroom Warm this Winter

    Winter Bathroom Blog Main

As the chill of winter sets in, there’s nothing quite as jarring as stepping into a cold bathroom. At Showers to You, we understand how essential it is to keep your bathroom warm and inviting during winter. That’s why we’re here to share expert advice on retaining heat in your bathroom, ensuring that your daily routines remain a source of comfort rather than discomfort.

Winter Bathroom SettingIt’s not just about maintaining a pleasant temperature. It’s about creating an environment that fosters relaxation and rejuvenation. Imagine no more unpleasant shocks of cold tiles underfoot. No more shivering while waiting for the shower to heat up. No more hurriedly towelling off in the frigid air. Instead, picture a bathroom that welcomes you with enveloping warmth, turning your everyday routines into pampering sessions.

This blog post will walk you through various ways to warm your bathroom this winter. We’ll explore different heating options and other practical tips that can affect your bathroom’s temperature. Whether underfloor heating, heated towel rails, or using suitable materials, we’ll guide you through every step.

How can I keep my bathroom warm without the heating on?

Keeping your bathroom warm without the heating on can be surprisingly simple…

    Insulation

Insulation is the cornerstone of a warm bathroom. By insulating your walls, floors, and windows, you create a barrier against heat loss. This technique promotes energy efficiency and enhances comfort in your bathroom, even without heating.

    Weather-stripping

In addition to insulation, sealing gaps around doors and windows plays a pivotal role in maintaining warmth. Weather-stripping is a practical solution that prevents drafts, keeping the cold and warm air out. Moreover, rugs can be a stylish and functional addition to your bathroom, offering extra warmth underfoot and contributing to heat retention.Warm Bathroom Lifestyle

    Correct Materials

Materials used in the bathroom also have an impact on its warmth. We recommend opting for materials that retain heat well, such as wood or vinyl, instead of traditional ceramic tiles. These materials add aesthetic appeal and contribute to a cosier bathroom environment.

    Painting and Lighting

Lighting and colour schemes are other aspects that can influence the perceived warmth of your bathroom. Soft, warm lighting and colours like reds, yellows, and oranges can evoke a feeling of warmth and cosiness, making your bathroom feel warmer. Installing an LED Mirror, such as the Scudo Alfie 500 x 700mm Soft Edge LED Mirror in Black, adds a warmth and bespoke feel to the bathroom.

    Ventilation

Ventilation, while crucial for preventing condensation, should be managed carefully to avoid unnecessary heat loss. The heat remains in the bathroom, so occasionally, turn the extractor fan off. Try a purifying plant, like English Ivy or Snake Plants, to remove excess moisture.Bathroom Door Closed

    Shower with the door shut.

When you shower with the door closed, steam from the hot water accumulates within the bathroom. This steam, in turn, raises the room’s temperature, creating a warmer environment. It’s an easy, cost-effective way to add warmth without any additional heating.

How do you make a cold bathroom feel warmer?

Natural light plays a significant role in creating warmth. By maximising the influx of sunlight through your windows, you can naturally elevate the room’s temperature. It’s an energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing solution. Bathmats are another effective addition. They offer warmth underfoot and help retain heat in the bathroom. Opt for materials that are soft and insulating for maximum effect.

Curtains also contribute to a warmer bathroom. Heavy curtains can provide insulation, reducing heat loss through windows. Plus, they add a touch of elegance to your setting. Consider investing in cosy and fluffy towels. Not only do they provide immediate warmth after a shower, but they also contribute to a warm, inviting atmosphere in the bathroom. Scented candles can create a perception of warmth. Their gentle glow and pleasant aroma evoke a sense of cosiness, making your bathroom feel warmer and more welcoming.

How can I heat my bathroom in winter?

    Underfloor Heating

Radiator BathroomUnderfloor heating presents a modern, efficient solution for warming your bathroom in the winter. The system distributes heat evenly across the floor, creating a comfortable, warm environment. It’s also energy-efficient, providing a sustainable way to keep your bathroom cosy. With underfloor heating, you’ll experience the luxury of a warm floor post-shower, enhancing your overall comfort.

    Heated Towel Rails

Heated towel rails are a dual-purpose solution offering room heating and towel warming. Among various brands, Reina Heated Towel Rails stands out for its quality and efficiency. However, the main benefit of heated towel rails is their ability to transform your bathroom into a warm, inviting space while ensuring you have a warm towel ready after every shower.

Do you want to learn more about Heated Towel Rails? Browse through our Heated Towel Rails Buyer’s Guide for more information!

Still, the primary value of radiators lies in their consistent performance and the familiar, comforting warmth they provide. Investing in a radiator means you’re opting for a tried-and-true method of maintaining a pleasantly warm bathroom throughout the winter.

  5. Common Problems with Radiator Valves

    Radiator Valves Main Image

As the chill of winter begins to settle in, our reliance on heating systems increases exponentially. They become our silent partners, working tirelessly to keep us warm and comfortable. However, radiators are not immune to technical issues like any other mechanical system. Among the most common problems that homeowners face with their radiators are related to radiator valves. Understanding the functioning of your Radiator and its components is not just about problem-solving; it’s about maximising efficiency, prolonging the lifespan of your heating system, and ensuring your home is as warm and inviting as possible.

In this informative blog post, Showers to You delve into the intricate world of radiator valves. We discuss how to identify a broken valve, what to do if a valve gets blocked, and how to fix a leaky valve. We aim to equip you with the knowledge to ensure your radiator functions optimally throughout this cold season.Radiator Valves (3)

    Why do Radiator Valves fail?

Radiator valves can fail due to several reasons. Age and frequent use can lead to wear and tear, causing leaks or complete failure. Similarly, corrosion, often triggered by high oxygen levels in the heating system’s water, can result in blockages and valve malfunctions.

An overlooked aspect of radiator maintenance can also contribute to valve failure. Without regular servicing, dirt and debris can accumulate, creating blockages that prevent proper valve operation. Incorrect installation is another potential cause. A valve must be fitted correctly, used with incompatible parts, or inadequately sealed to function as intended.

Lastly, temperature fluctuations can adversely impact the radiator valves. Extreme or repeated changes in temperature can cause the valves to expand and contract. Over time, this can lead to cracks, leaks, and eventual failure.

How do I know if my radiator valve is broken?

Identifying a broken radiator valve is crucial to maintaining the efficiency of your heating system:

Inconsistent Heating: If your radiators aren’t heating evenly, it may be due to a faulty valve. The uneven heat distribution could affect other components like your Heated Towel Rails.

Leaking Valve: A leaking valve is a clear sign of a problem. This can cause water damage and reduce your system’s effectiveness.

Noisy Radiator: If your Radiator makes unusual noises, it might indicate a valve issue.

Stuck Valve: If you can’t turn the valve or it’s hard to move, it’s likely broken.

Increased Energy Bills: A faulty valve can cause your system to work harder, leading to higher energy bills.

Can Radiator Valves get blocked?Radiator Valves

Yes, radiator valves can indeed get blocked. This is usually due to a buildup of sludge, rust, or debris inside the valve. Blockages can prevent hot water from circulating effectively through your radiator system, leading to issues like inconsistent heating or cold spots on your radiators.

Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent such blockages. A professional can flush your system to remove buildup and ensure proper functioning. Additionally, installing high-quality valves can also reduce the risk of blockages.

Can you replace a Radiator Valve?

Yes, you can replace a radiator valve. The process involves draining the heating system, loosening the valve nuts, cleaning the pipes, and fitting the new valve. Our “How to Change a Radiator Valve” blog post has detailed steps.

How do I fix a stuck Radiator Valve?

Fixing a stuck radiator valve involves a few steps. Please remember safety is paramount, and having the right tools is essential. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Prepare Your Tools: Gather the necessary tools like an adjustable spanner, pliers, and a cloth.

Turn Off Your Heating System: Always turn off your heating system before starting work on your radiators.

Locate the Stuck Valve: Identify which valve is stuck. It could be the lockshield valve or the control valve.

Loosen the Valve: Use the adjustable spanner and pliers to loosen the valve carefully. Use the cloth to protect the valve from any tool marks.

Check for Blockages: Once loosened, check for any blockages like debris or rust. Remove these if present.

Test the Radiator: Turn your heating system back on to see if the valve works properly.

If the valve remains stuck or you need clarification on performing these steps yourself, we recommend seeking professional assistance.

Can you use WD40 on a Radiator Valve?

WD40 can be used on a radiator valve, but caution is advised. This product is excellent for loosening stuck components and providing temporary relief from squeaking or stiffness. However, it’s not a long-term solution for a faulty valve. It’s important to note that using WD40 should never replace professional maintenance or repairs.

Kartell RadiatorsHow do I fix a Radiator Valve Pin?

Fixing a radiator valve pin is a task that requires careful attention and the right tools. It’s crucial to ensure safety and be equipped with the necessary tools before starting. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide:

Gather Your Tools: You will require a few essential tools like an adjustable spanner, a pair of pliers, and a soft cloth to protect the valve from scratches or tool marks.

Turn Off the Heating System: This is a crucial safety step. Ensure your heating system is off and cool before working on the radiators.

Identify the Problematic Valve Pin: The valve pin is usually located inside the valve. Identify the one that seems to be stuck or non-responsive.

Loosen the Valve Pin: Carefully loosen the valve pin with the help of the adjustable spanner or pliers. Remember to use a soft cloth to protect the valve from damage.

Check for Blockages: Once the valve pin is loosened, check for any signs of blockages, such as debris or rust. If you find any, make sure to remove them.

Test Your Radiator: After these steps, switch your heating system back on to test if the valve pin functions correctly.

Can I fix a Radiator Valve without draining the system?

Fixing a radiator valve without draining the system is indeed feasible. It’s a process that requires some careful steps to ensure success, especially when dealing with high-quality products like Kartell Radiators.

Firstly, safety is paramount. Turn off the heating system. This step is crucial to prevent any accidents or damage during the procedure. Next, you must identify the problematic valve on your Kartell Radiator. Recognising the faulty valve is critical to a successful repair; misidentifying could lead to unnecessary work or damage.

Before starting the repair, you’ll want to protect the surroundings. Shielding the floor and nearby objects can prevent accidental damage from water or tools during the repair.

Once you’ve prepared the area, you can remove the old valves. This step should be done carefully to avoid causing additional issues with the Radiator. With the old valve removed, you’re ready to install the new valve. Replacing the valve correctly is critical for ensuring the proper function of your Radiator. After you’ve installed the new valve, testing the system is essential. Turn your heating system back on to see if the new valve works correctly. If you still need to, you may need to repeat some steps or seek professional assistance.

How do I fix a leaky Radiator Valve?Leaking Radiator Valve

Fixing a leaky radiator valve involves a few key steps. Always remember that safety comes first. Before starting the procedure, turn your heating and water systems off. This is to prevent any potential accidents or damage during the process. Identify the problematic valve on your Radiator. Recognising the faulty valve is crucial to a successful repair; misidentifying it could lead to unnecessary work or damage.

Next, protect the area around your Radiator. Cover the floor and nearby objects to prevent accidental damage from water or tools during the repair. Now you’re ready to remove the old valves. This step should be done carefully to avoid causing additional issues with the Radiator.

Remove the old valve first, then proceed to install the new one. Replacing the valve correctly is essential for ensuring the proper function of your Radiator. After you’ve installed the new valve, testing the system is essential. Turn your heating system back on to see if the new valve works correctly.

If your radiator or radiator valve is still not working, the next step could be to Bleed the Radiators.

  8. How to Change a Radiator Valve

    Radiator Valve Main

That time of year has come again. The darker nights are quickly closing in, the temperature outside is slowly dropping, and you have decided to turn on the radiators in your home. Have you debated whether to replace or update your radiator valve?

You may ask, “Why should I change my radiator valve“? There are several reasons why you might consider changing your radiator valve. The first and most obvious reason is if the valve is broken or faulty, as this can hinder your ability to effectively control the heating in your home. Another reason to change your radiator valve is for efficiency. Over time, valves can become worn or damaged, and replacing them can improve the overall performance of your heating system. Lastly, aesthetics can be a compelling reason to change your radiator valve. If your current valve doesn’t match your home’s colour scheme or style, replacing it with one that does can enhance the overall look of your space.

This blog post will expertly guide you through efficiently removing and installing a new radiator valve. Unless you are confident about more advanced DIY jobs, we recommend hiring an experienced trade professional to deal with plumbing issues within your home. We also have a dedicated guide on how to install a radiator.

When should I change my radiator valves?

Changing radiator valves is not a frequent requirement. Still, there are certain circumstances when it becomes necessary for the efficient functioning of your heating system. A malfunctioning valve can hinder your ability to control your home’s heating effectively. Another situation where changing your radiator valve might be needed is upgrading to a new thermostatic radiator valve (TRV). Radiator Valve (1)

What is a Thermostatic Radiator Valve?

A Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) is a specialised valve that adjusts the flow of hot water to a radiator based on the surrounding room temperature. This self-regulating mechanism ensures that your living spaces maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature. When the room temperature drops below the set level on the valve, it opens to allow more hot water into the radiator, increasing the heat output.

Conversely, when the room reaches the desired temperature, the valve automatically reduces the flow of hot water, maintaining the optimum temperature and conserving energy. This energy-saving feature enhances your comfort and contributes to reducing your carbon footprint and lowering your heating bills.

Can you change a radiator valve without draining the system?

Yes, changing a radiator valve without draining the entire system is possible. This method can save you time and hassle, making the process less tedious (more on this shortly). If not done correctly, there’s a risk of causing damage to your heating system. Therefore, if you’re uncomfortable undertaking such tasks, seeking professional help is always advisable.

    Are radiator valves interchangeable?

Most radiator valves are interchangeable. The standard size in the UK is 15mm. However, alternate sizes are available (8mm, 10mm and 22mm). There is only sometimes interchangeability between different brands or models unless by sheer chance. Furthermore, whilst all Thermostatic Radiator Valves may have a standard thread size, they are calibrated differently, requiring you to match the manufacturer/model.

How to change radiator valves without draining the system?

You will need (for both options):

    Towel/ Old Cloth

An old container or a bucket

    Adjustable spanner

Radiator bleed key or a flat-top screwdriver

    Jointing compound

    Pliers

Radiator Drain Hose/ Dedicated Draining Kit

Please note that this is a general how-to guide. Although we have tried to make this guide universal, your radiator valve set-up may differ. We always suggest consulting a trade professional before undertaking a plumbing task.

Step One: Turn off the valves

Turn off the radiator drain valve to stop the water flow to the radiator. Alternatively, if the radiator has a lock shield, use the adjustable spanner to turn it off.

    Step Two: Release the pressure

Slowly release the pressure from the radiator using a flat-top screwdriver or a bleed key. Some water may start to leak from the valve (see our guide on how to bleed a radiator), so use the old towel or cloth to prevent the water from spilling onto the floor. Once the hissing noise has stopped, close the valve and tighten it back to the original position.Valve (2)

    Step Three: Loosen the valves

Using the spanner, carefully undo the large-cap nuts until you hear them clock. Some excess water may spill from the valves, so have your towel ready. After draining the water from the valves, grab a spanner or pliers. With these tools, unscrew the nuts and extract the valve from the radiator.

Step Four: Install the new valve

Whether the valve is manual or thermostatic, align the body with the radiator valve adapter and tighten the cap nut. Be careful not to tighten it too much, or the thread is at risk of getting damaged! Using some form of jointing compound ensures a watertight seal.

    Step Five: Final checks

Please make sure the valves are tight and ensure they are all closed. Turn the system back on and watch for leaks within the new joints. Once you’re happy with this, open the new radiator valve so the water can flow into the radiator. Bleed the radiator again to remove any trapped air (it is also worth bleeding any radiator near the new radiator valve).

How to change radiator valves by draining the system?

Step One: Turn off the heating system: The first step in changing your radiator valves is to turn off your heating system. This will prevent hot water from circulating and potentially causing injury.

Step Two: Drain the system: Next, you’ll need to drain the system. This can typically be done by locating the drain valve on your central heating system and attaching a hose to it or with a Radiator Drain Hose Kit. The other end of the hose should be placed somewhere where the water can safely drain away, such as outside or into a bucket.

Step Three: Remove the old valve: Once the system has been drained, you can remove the old valve. Typically, you loosen the cap nuts connecting the valve to both the radiator and pipe.

Step Four: Install the new valve: After removing the old valve, you can install the new one. Make sure to tighten the cap nuts securely to prevent any leaks.

Step Five: Refill the system: Once the new valve is installed, you can refill the system. This is typically done by closing the drain valve and opening the filling loop on your boiler.

Step Six: Bleed the radiators: Finally, you’ll need to bleed the radiators to remove any air that may have gotten into the system during the process.Valve (3)

  9. How to Replace a Shower Head

    Main Shower head Image

Switching out your shower head is one of the most direct and manageable DIY tasks for homeowners. Whether you’re aiming to refresh your bathroom with a new look or need to replace a faulty unit, this process is as straightforward as it gets. Installing a new showerhead or handset can significantly boost the functionality of your bathroom while also elevating its visual appeal. In this detailed and informative blog post, we at Showers to You will guide you through each step of replacing your shower head swiftly and efficiently.Shower Head (3)

What tools do I need to replace a shower head?

If you are replacing a Fixed Shower Head, chances are no tools are required! However, if you are replacing an older model or handset, we suggest having the following at the ready:

    – Adjustable wrench

    – Slip-joint pliers

    – Old cloth

    – Teflon tape

Can I replace a showerhead myself?

Indeed, changing a shower head is a task that you can easily perform yourself. It’s a straightforward process that requires only a few basic tools and steps.

Step One: Ensure the Shower is Off

This is an essential step that might appear fundamental or even self-evident. Still, it carries immense importance in the overall process. Turning off the shower is not just a matter of convenience but also a vital safety measure. It serves to prevent any unnecessary water leakage during the replacement process. This step safeguards against potential water wastage and protects you and your bathroom surroundings from possible water damage.

Step Two: Remove the Old Shower Head

Using adjustable pliers, loosen the nut connecting the shower head to the arm. Once you’ve loosened it, use your hands to unscrew the head in an anticlockwise position. Use a wrench to remove it if it’s too tight to move with your hands alone. Set it aside.

Some shower heads will not require any tools to replace them. Once removed from the handset holder, some can be easily unscrewed with an anticlockwise position. However, ensure the washer remains inside the shower arm or hose.

Teflon Tape ImageStep Three: Add Teflon Tape

Wrap Teflon tape around the threading of the shower arm. This tape will help prevent leaks and ensure your new shower head is tightly connected. Ensure that you cover the threading but do not overdo it, as it can cause the head not to screw in fully.

Step Four: Install New Shower Head

Take your new shower head and screw it onto the shower arm in a clockwise direction. Tighten it with your hands, then use adjustable pliers to secure it, ensuring it’s not too tight. Turn on your water supply and test your new shower head. If there are leaks, tighten the nut slightly with the pliers. Wipe down the new head and the old shower hose or arm using the cloth for a sparkling finish.

    Shower Head Installation FAQ

Do you need to turn the water off to replace a shower head?

No, turning off the water supply when replacing a shower head is unnecessary. Your home’s plumbing system is designed to keep the water from flowing until the shower valve is turned on. So, as long as the shower valve remains in the ‘off’ position, you can replace the shower head without worrying about water flow. However, be careful not to accidentally activate the shower valve.Shower Head (2)

Are all showerheads the same size?

Shower heads come in varying sizes and designs. Still, the connection size between the shower head and arm is typically standardised globally, including in the UK. The standard thread size for these connections is 1/2-inch BSP (British Standard Pipe). This means that most shower heads should fit onto any standard shower arm with a 1/2-inch outer diameter and male threads.

However, while the connections are usually standardised, the shower heads’ length, width, and overall design can vary significantly. They can range from small, fixed models to larger rainfall or handheld types. For example, the Roper Rhodes Square Single Function Handset has a length of 235mm, and the Nuie Round Pencil Chrome Shower Handset size is 195mm.

    How much do showerheads cost?

Shower heads come in a wide range of prices, depending on factors such as design, brand, features, and materials used. The cheapest on Showers to You is the Bristan Single Function Rub Clean Handset, at only £10.44. Meanwhile, the Aqualisa 200mm Wall Fixed Traditional Shower Head in Gold is the most expensive at nearly £420.

Shower Head ImageHow do I clean my new showerhead?

Maintaining your new showerhead is essential. If the head is not cleaned regularly, limescale and harmful bacteria can build up over time, potentially damaging the shower head. We have written a detailed and thorough blog post on How to Clean a Showerhead, including various remedies and step-by-step instructions.

    In Conclusion

Replacing a showerhead may seem intimidating, but you can do it in less than an hour with the right tools and the proper steps. Following our step-by-step guide, you can upgrade your bathroom without paying for professional plumbing services. Whether you plan to install a new showerhead for design purposes or to improve functionality, you can save time and money and achieve a satisfactory result.

  10. World Toilet Day: A Global Sanitation Crisis

    World Toilet Day Image (1)
    World Toilet Day Poster (1)

The hummingbird is the symbol for this year’s World Toilet Day.

Have you ever taken a moment to ponder on the privilege of having access to clean water and sanitation facilities? These amenities, which many of us take for granted, remain a distant luxury for countless individuals across the globe. This stark reality underscores the significance of World Toilet Day, an annual observance held on 19th November. The primary aim of this day is to raise global awareness about the pressing sanitation crisis and the urgent need for clean, safe toilets accessible to all.

In this blog post from Showers to You, we delve deep into the history and purpose of World Toilet Day, a topic that holds great relevance today. According to the United Nations, which officially recognised this observance day in 2013, its objective is to inspire action to address the global sanitation crisis.

The History and Purpose of World Toilet Day

The history of World Toilet Day can be traced back to 19th November 2001 to raise awareness against the ongoing global sanitation crisis. World Toilet Day, celebrated annually on 19th November, is a critical global observance officially recognised by the United Nations since 2013. The primary objective of this day is to draw attention to the pressing global sanitation crisis. This is a significant issue that remains largely overlooked despite its far-reaching implications.

Today, an alarming number of around 3.5 billion people across the globe are still without access to safe sanitation facilities. This constitutes more than half the world’s population, a sobering statistic that underscores the severity of this crisis. Lack of proper sanitation facilities poses severe health risks and infringes on individuals’ dignity and fundamental human rights.

World Toilet Day is a powerful platform to raise awareness about this critical issue and galvanise collective action towards addressing it. The observance of this day is not just about highlighting the problem; it is also about fostering a sense of urgency and commitment towards finding sustainable solutions.Saving Water Mother Nature

    Why Raising Awareness is Important

In 2023, the theme is Accelerating Change. The absence of sanitation facilities is a significant contributor to disease and mortality, predominantly impacting developing nations. Insufficient sanitation amenities coupled with substandard hygiene practices can lead to the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid fever.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by this lack of access to sanitation facilities. The need for privacy and safety often compels them to travel long distances in search of a secure place to relieve themselves. This not only exposes them to potential threats and dangers but also places them at an increased risk of attacks and violence.

Taking Action: What We Can Do to Help Tackle the Sanitation Crisis

We all must play an active role in tackling the global sanitation crisis. According to UN Water, there are three key actions that have garnered popularity in the UK for their effectiveness:

Water Conservation – One of the most direct ways to contribute is through water-saving measures. This can include taking shorter showers, promptly repairing leaky faucets or pipes, and installing water-efficient appliances such as low-flow showerheads and toilets. Through these simple yet impactful steps, we can significantly reduce our water consumption and contribute towards a sustainable future. Check out our dedicated blog post on How to save water in the Bathroom for various suggestions.

Prevention of Pollution – Another critical action is to prevent pollution. This includes being mindful of what we flush down the toilet. Non-biodegradable items such as wet wipes or sanitary products can cause significant damage to our water systems. Instead, opt for disposal methods that do not harm our environment. Additionally, using eco-friendly cleaning products can substantially reduce the amount of harmful chemicals that enter our water systems.

World Toilet Day Logo (1)Sustainable Food Choices – Conscious food choices can also make a difference. Opting to consume locally sourced food or food with a lower water footprint helps reduce the demand for water-intensive agriculture. This not only supports local economies but also reduces our overall carbon footprint.

We can all contribute to tackling the global sanitation crisis by adopting these actions. Remember, every small effort counts, and we can make a significant difference together. You can see the United Kingdom’s current Water Action Agenda and future goals.

    To Conclude

In summary, World Toilet Day serves as a reminder that access to sanitation facilities should be a fundamental human right, and we must raise awareness of the global sanitation crisis and take steps to tackle it. We can solve the sanitation crisis by implementing simple actions like saving water, stopping pollution, and eating local food. We all have a role to play in ensuring worldwide access to safe and clean toilets, promoting dignity. Remember, your contribution is vital for a world with dignified sanitation facilities for everyone
