How to fit a basin waste in 4 easy steps

How to fit a basin waste in 4 easy steps

A basin waste connects your existing basin to a waste pipe, allowing your basin to either drain away the water or fill up. Although there are many available designs and finishes of basin wastes available, the installation process is pretty much identical. This short guide can be applied to any basin waste fitting.

Every single basin that you buy will require a waste of some sorts. There are waste fittings for kitchen sinks, waste fittings for shower enclosures and here today a guide to fitting a basin waste.

What basin waste do I need?

The first thing to establish is whether you need a slotted waste or an unslotted basin waste. When your basin has an overflow then you will need a slotted waste to enable connection from the overflow to the waste. When your basin does not feature an overflow, then there is no need for the hole within a slotted waste – therefore an unslotted can be chosen.

There are many types of wastes from click-clack to pop-up and traditional plug and chain. Use our handy guide to help you discover what basin waste you need.

Step by step guide: How to install your basin waste

What you will need:

    · Drying cloth

    · Grips

    · Silicone (*optional)

    · Screwdriver (Optional)

Before you start, make sure that:

    · The water supply is turned off – this is optional (depending on your confidence). It makes no difference if the supply is turned on or off, however, if the water is off then any leaks or spillages won’t occur.

    · Check the basin is dry – this achieves a stronger watertight seal

    · Remove the old basin waste and trap – make sure the area is dry and clean. A pair of pliers, grips and a screwdriver may be required.

    · Check your manufacturer’s guarantee – more on this in stage 3. As silicone is advised but not essential, please check the guarantee of your basin to avoid any further issues. E.g. some manufacturers explain that their guarantee is void if silicone is used.

  1. After removing the old basin waste and drying the area, unscrew the nut and remove the washer on your waste.
  2. Insert the new basin waste into the old slot for a flush fit. If the waste features an overflow, make sure the direction of the hole is lined up with the waste.
  3. Optional step – silicone the gaps between the basin and the waste. This isn’t essential but creates a watertight seal around the waste. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s policies regarding fitting.
  4. Reattach the old trap and screw tightly. Turn the water supply back on and test for any leaks.

*Disclaimer – The information on this guide is for general information purposes only. Please check the manufacturer’s warranty/ guarantee before using silicone or other bonding products to avoid any future claims from being voided.
